Our great epic Outback Queensland adventure – Roma

The first part of our trip was out to Roma. We had decided not to camp this time, and to stay in motels and cabins, so that was different for us. I think we stopped in Dalby for lunch.

This first day had a detour out to Caliguel Lagoon where my aunt and uncle were camping, then on to Roma! By popular vote from the kids we went to the same pub for dinner that we went to when we stopped in Roma on the way to and from Carnarvon Gorge. It is tradition, they told us.

The next morning, with only a 3 hour drive ahead of us, we went to The Big Rig, had breakfast at their cafe and then into their displays on the gas and mining history of Roma. It was interesting and included a tower with a view of the town.

Then it was time for our drive to Charleville, stopping first for a cricket set from a toy shop as we always seem to find we need something random along the way. It was a good drive, we got stuck behind an oversized load, I wished I’d factored in a swim at the Mitchell Pool as we drove through town, and we made it to Charleville in enough time to tour The Secret Base and find out about the history of the town during World War II.
